Resume format for freshers

A fresher resume is one page, in this order: contact details, a two-line summary, education, projects, internships, skills, then certifications and achievements. Experience does not come first, because you do not have any yet — projects are what a recruiter reads instead. Everything stays plain text an ATS can parse.

What order do the sections go in?

Top to bottom, exactly this. Each heading below is the heading to use on the page.

  1. 1

    Contact details

Name, phone, email, city and a LinkedIn or GitHub link — as normal text at the top, never inside a header box or an image, because that is the part ATS software most often fails to read.

  2. 2

    Summary (two lines)

State your degree, your strongest skills and the role you are applying for. Write it for one job at a time; a summary that fits every job tells the recruiter nothing.

  3. 3

    Education

This ranks above everything except the summary on a fresher resume, because it is your main credential. Degree, college, year of passing, and your percentage or CGPA if it helps you.

  4. 4

    Projects

The section that replaces work experience. Two or three projects, each with what you built, the tools you used, and what the result was — plus a live link or repository where one exists.

  5. 5

    Internships and training

Any internship, industrial training or freelance work goes here in reverse-chronological order. If you have none, delete the heading rather than leaving it empty.

  6. 6

    Skills

A plain list of the languages, frameworks and tools you can actually be questioned on. Match the wording to the job description, and drop anything you could not defend in an interview.

  7. 7

    Certifications and achievements

Last, and only if they are real and relevant — course certificates, hackathon results, scholarships, positions of responsibility. This section is optional; the six above are not.

How long should it be? One page. A fresher resume that runs to two pages is padded, and the padding is what gets cut first when someone skims it.

What gets this format rejected?

  • A two-column template where the ATS reads the columns in the wrong order.
  • Putting Experience above Education when you have no experience to put in it.
  • A photo, a graphic skill bar, or a rating out of five — none of them survive parsing, and none of them say anything.
  • An objective line that says you are seeking a challenging role in a reputed organisation. It is on every fresher resume, so it separates you from nobody.
  • Listing a skill you cannot answer a follow-up question about.
  • Sending a scanned or image PDF. Export text-based PDF so the text can be selected.

Not sure which of these your current resume has? The free ATS checker scores it and names the problems, with no account.

Resume format for freshers — FAQ

What is the correct resume format for a fresher?

Contact details, a two-line summary, education, projects, internships, skills, then certifications and achievements — on a single page. Education and projects sit high because they are the only evidence a fresher has; the work-experience section that dominates an experienced resume simply does not exist yet.

How long should a fresher resume be?

One page. If it will not fit, cut the oldest schooling detail, cut the objective line, and cut any skill you would not want to be questioned on — in that order.

What do I write if I have no internship and no experience?

Projects. Two or three of them, each stating what you built, which tools you used and what the outcome was. A college project, a clone app or an open-source contribution all count, as long as you can be asked about them and can answer.

Should a fresher resume have a photo?

Not for most Indian applications. Photos push the layout into shapes that parse badly, and they take space that the projects section needs. Add one only when the employer specifically asks for it.

Objective or summary — which one?

A summary. An objective describes what you want; a summary describes what you bring. Two lines naming your degree, your strongest skills and the role you are targeting will always outperform a generic objective sentence.

PDF or Word for a fresher resume?

PDF, exported as text rather than as a scan or an image. PDF keeps the formatting identical on the recruiter's screen, and a text-based PDF is read correctly by applicant tracking systems. Hirenix exports text-based PDF.

Is this free to build on Hirenix?

Yes. A free account gives you one full AI-assisted resume build, and the ATS score checker runs without an account at all. Pro at ₹99 a month unlocks the rest of the templates and unlimited rewrites — see the spec list on this page for the exact limits.
